Photonis Defense has received an order to supply 1,600 Binocular Night Observation Device systems to the US Army.

Photonis Defense has received an order to supply 1,600 Binocular Night Observation Device (BiNOD) systems to the US Army.

The army launched the BiNOD program to develop, test, and produce a lower-cost, helmet-mounted binocular system that amplifies available light to help soldiers see in dark environments.

Initial deliveries are expected by the end of 2026, with most of the systems scheduled for delivery in 2027.

The order falls under a contract awarded in March 2026 with a maximum potential value of $352.6 million. Its value was not disclosed.

The award moves the program from development, testing, and qualification to low-rate initial production, during which a limited number of systems will be manufactured ahead of potential large-scale production.

Photonis Defense will produce and test the complete devices at its US facility using image intensifier tubes supplied by its French parent company, Exosens.

Expanding Imaging Production

The BiNOD order follows several recent moves by Exosens to increase production and develop new infrared technologies.

Last month, the company announced plans to triple its thermal camera production capacity in response to demand for compact imaging systems used aboard drones and in counter-drone operations.

In June, Lithuanian sensor manufacturer BROLIS selected Exosens to supply 17,000 image intensifier tubes for night-vision equipment ordered by the Czech Armed Forces. The tubes amplify available light to produce images in dark environments.

Earlier this year, Exosens also joined the SPIRIT program, a four-year European Defence Fund project valued at 39 million euros ($45 million).

The initiative focuses on improving the resolution, sensitivity, and onboard processing of infrared detectors while establishing a European supply chain covering semiconductor components, detector production, and camera integration.
