BAE Systems has completed a new automated testing capability for Link 16 systems used on US Air Force F-16 fighter jets, aiming to reduce maintenance time and return aircraft to service faster.

The upgrade supports the Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio System (MIDS JTRS), which enables encrypted voice, video, and tactical data sharing between air, sea, and ground forces.

This setup allows technicians to diagnose and validate MIDS JTRS terminals directly at operational bases instead of sending equipment elsewhere for testing.

BAE Systems said the automated solution improves testing fidelity for tactical navigation functions while reducing downtime and unnecessary replacement of parts.

According to the company, the new testing capability has been integrated into the Versamodule Extensions for Instrumentation Improved Avionics Intermediate Shop and Rackmount Improved Avionics Intermediate Shop systems already used by maintainers.

Beyond the F-16, the Department of Defense is fielding MIDS JTRS across platforms including the F-15, F/A-18, and F-22.

Link 16 Expands Across Platforms

Link 16 remains one of NATO’s core tactical communications standards and is widely used across US and allied military aircraft, ships, and command systems.

Defense contractors have continued upgrading and using Link 16 communications systems in recent years as armed forces push for faster and more resilient battlefield connectivity.

In January, the US Navy selected Data Link Solutions to supply hundreds of MIDS JTRS terminals under a $248-million contract. The systems provide jam-resistant Link 16 communications for sharing real-time tactical data across air, land, and sea platforms.

In November 2025, Science Applications International and HavocAI integrated autonomous maritime fleets with the Joint Range Extension system, extending Link 16 connectivity to unmanned naval platforms and improving interoperability with allied networks. 

Earlier, in October 2024, the US Marine Corps demonstrated Link 16 capability on the XQ-58A Valkyrie unmanned aerial vehicle.
