New Delhi’s defense ministry verified it had “initiated efforts in a concerted manner to co-join” the initiative in a document submitted to lawmakers in early August, according to local Indian media.

If approved, the South Asian country’s cooperation in the FCAS would grant its industry access to appropriate technologies, manned-unmanned teaming technologies, artificial intelligence solutions, and cloud networking.

The Indian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Defence has requested a detailed status report, roadmap, and timeline related to the potential acquisition in the defense agency’s next submission.

Beneficial for France, India

The decision follows the June split between France and Germany over workshare disputes on FCAS’ collaborative approach, intellectual property rights, and fighter specifications, leaving Paris open to new international partners.

Sources noted that the move aligns with expanding Franco-Indian defense ties, including talks for 114 additional Rafale fighters and joint engine development for India’s homegrown Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft.

Currently, France and India share operational requirements for carrier-capable aircraft and airborne nuclear deterrence capabilities, unlike Germany, which has no aircraft carriers and relies on NATO nuclear-sharing arrangements rather than independent airborne capability.
