The APG-83 Scalable Agile Beam Radar, known as SABR, is designed to modernize aircraft such as the F-16 by bringing sensing performance closer to that of newer fighters, including advanced targeting and situational awareness functions.
At its core, the system integrates multiple sensing modes into a single radar set, enabling aircrews to track moving targets, map terrain, and detect electronic emissions without switching systems.
Northrop Grumman said the radar is powered by US-made microelectronics and built with a modular design that allows integration across different aircraft platforms.
Because of its software-driven architecture, SABR can be upgraded over time without major hardware changes, a feature aimed at keeping older aircraft relevant as electronic warfare environments become more complex.
F-16 Modernization Drives Radar Demand
Recent F-16 upgrade programs have increasingly centered on radar adoption as air forces extend the operational life of fourth-generation fighters while improving detection, tracking, and electronic warfare resilience.
The US has continued fielding F-16s upgraded to the F-16V standard, which integrates the APG-83 SABR radar.
Beyond the US, Taiwan remains one of the most significant operators of SABR-equipped F-16V aircraft.
Singapore has also advanced its F-16 modernization roadmap, with upgraded aircraft incorporating advanced avionics suites consistent with radar integration.
