BAE Systems has delivered key flight hardware for a US Space Force missile warning satellite program scheduled for launch in 2028.
The company said it completed delivery of the sensor subassembly and sensor system controller for the Next Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared Polar (NGP) program, which is designed to improve missile warning, battlespace awareness, and technical intelligence capabilities for the US military.
The delivered hardware will support assembly of the program’s first payload, known as Flight Unit 1.
BAE Systems explained that the sensor subassembly includes optics, pointing mechanisms, control electronics, and electrical interfaces connected to the spacecraft. Meanwhile, the sensor system controller manages commands, telemetry data, power conversion, and mirror direction for the payload.
The NGP effort forms part of the US Space Force’s push to modernize missile tracking and early warning systems as concerns grow over hypersonic weapons and advanced missile threats from rival powers.
“We met multiple challenges across a multiyear timeframe to successfully deliver our components for the next stage of full payload assembly,” Thai Sheridan, vice president and general manager of Military Space for BAE Systems, said.
BAE Systems is also producing a second flight unit for the mission, which is expected to support a 2030 launch schedule.
BAE Systems Supports US Space Force
BAE Systems has secured several US Space Force-related milestones and contracts over the past year as the service expands its space-based defense architecture.
The company was among several firms awarded contracts in April to develop next-generation space domain awareness capabilities under the US Space Force’s Andromeda program.
In March, BAE Systems completed the preliminary design review for a US Space Force satellite program focused on tracking ballistic and hypersonic missiles.
The milestone followed a $1.2-billion contract awarded in June 2025 to develop 10 Epoch 2 spacecraft for the Resilient Missile Warning and Tracking Medium Earth Orbit program.
