Kongsberg has signed a contract with General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada to deliver the Protector RS4 remote weapon systems.
Kongsberg has signed a 1.1-billion-Norwegian krona ($118-million) contract with General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada (GDLS-Canada) to deliver the Protector RS4 remote weapon system for the Canadian Army’s Armoured Combat Support Vehicle (ACSV).
Part of Kongsberg’s Protector family, the RS4 is designed to enhance vehicle crew survivability, precision, and situational awareness.
The latest deal follows a 500-million Norwegian krona ($53-million) order awarded in 2020 for the ACSV program. The program initially called for 360 vehicles and was later expanded by an additional 190 vehicles.
Kongsberg has not disclosed the number of RS4 systems covered by the new contract or their delivery schedule.
“This contract confirms our customer’s confidence in the Protector systems and further strengthens our long-term partnership with GDLS-Canada,” Kongsberg Executive Vice President and President of its Defence Systems division, Kjetil Reiten Myhra, said.
“We are proud that the RS4 continues to be selected as a key capability for the Canadian Armed Forces’ modern vehicle fleet.”
Protector RS4
Kongsberg’s Protector RS4 is a flexible remote weapon station designed to accommodate small- and medium-caliber weapons, coaxial weapons, and anti-tank guided missiles.
Its fully stabilized 2+2-axis Detached Line of Sight architecture enables continuous target tracking independently of weapon movement and ballistics, improving accuracy while firing on the move.
Platform-independent by design, the system can be installed on land and maritime platforms for both stationary and mobile operations. Advanced electro-optical sensors and cameras provide configurable day- and night-operation capabilities.
Depending on the configuration, the RS4 weighs between 135 and 190 kilograms (298 and 419 pounds) and stands 505 to 765 millimeters (20 to 30 inches) high, excluding weapons and ammunition.
