The company invested $6 million in the facility at ProvPort in Providence, which spans 50,000 square feet (4,645 square meters). 

It will design, produce, and deliver maritime training systems to meet demands “with the speed and scale our customers require,” according to Nino Dicosmo, L3Harris president for Maritime, Space, & Mission Systems.

This investment adds capacity to L3Harris' existing Rhode Island operations, which have been in place since 1991. Its Ashaway facility produces undersea sensor systems and military sonar for the US Navy.

The new site will also support local partnerships with small businesses, universities, port operators, and specialized maritime service providers. 

“ProvPort gives us a strategic advantage with its prime location and access to a highly skilled maritime workforce, and we are proud to deepen our commitment to Rhode Island,” Dicosmo said. 

US Naval Defense Facilities

L3Harris' new facility joins a series of recent US investments aimed at expanding naval manufacturing and support capacity.

In June, uncrewed surface vessel manufacturer MARTAC launched an innovation center in San Diego, California to support research, development, testing, systems integration, and live-water demonstrations.

Hadrian opened a manufacturing facility in Cherokee, Alabama in March to produce components for Virginia-class attack submarines and Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines. The 2.2-million-square-foot (204,000-square-meter) project involves $900 million in navy funding and $1.5 billion in private investment.

In January, Leonardo DRS expanded its manufacturing capacity with a naval power and propulsion facility near Charleston, South Carolina. The facility handles assembly, integration, and testing of naval power and propulsion equipment, including systems supporting the Columbia-class submarine program.
