Lockheed Martin has announced a multimillion-dollar investment to develop a Modular Payload Delivery System (MPDS) that could enable different offensive and defensive hypersonic payloads to be carried by a common missile-body architecture.
The initiative supports efforts to scale hypersonic weapons production amid a rising threat environment, including lessons from the ongoing war with Iran, which has placed additional pressure on US missile inventories and defense industrial capacity.
The approach complements Lockheed’s recent partnership with Albany Engineered Composites to accelerate hypersonic production using advanced composite manufacturing technologies.
Modular Payload Delivery System
According to Lockheed, the MPDS allows diverse payloads to be integrated with minimal impact on the overall system. A common hypersonic airframe could support different missions, including long-range strike, larger payloads for shorter-range missions, and missile defense applications.
Built on flight-tested technologies, the system uses streamlined integration and automated manufacturing to reduce labor requirements and shorten delivery timelines.

“By investing in a modular payload delivery system built upon our proven hypersonic technologies and legacy, we're expanding operational utility, delivering affordability and accelerating advanced capabilities that would be historically burdened by development timelines and challenges."
