Lockheed Martin has completed the first test of a containerized launcher designed to fire Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System munitions.

Lockheed Martin has completed the first live-fire test of a containerized launcher designed to fire Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) munitions from land, air, and sea. 

During the demonstration, the Lockheed team loaded and launched a Reduced-Range Practice Rocket, a training round used by HIMARS and M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) crews to practice firing GMLRS and other MLRS family of munitions rounds. 

The Kodiak system offers users a flexible and cost-effective way to add precision fires capability to platforms that cannot accommodate conventional rocket launchers. 

In addition to its cost advantages, the Kodiak has a lower-observable profile than mobile launchers such as the HIMARS and M270A2 MLRS, according to Lockheed Martin.

Each container can hold up to 12 GMLRS rockets, providing scalable firepower from a single, compact footprint, the US defense company added.

Containerized Launcher for Offensive, Defensive Firepower 

The demonstration comes just months after Lockheed Martin tested its Grizzly containerized launcher, which is designed to fire Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles against attack drones.

Together, the two systems highlight Lockheed Martin’s approach to containerizing both offensive and defensive firepower.

“Achieving a live-fire launch from our Kodiak containerized system in under six months showcases the speed and agility our customers demand,” vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin Advanced Programs Randy Crites said.

“Completing all mission requirements on our first attempt reinforces our commitment to delivering a ready-to-fire solution that keeps pace with the evolving battlefield.”
