The US has selected Lockheed Martin to modernize the software platform used to model and simulate missile defense systems.

The company will develop, evolve, modernize, and sustain Missile Defense Agency's Modeling & Simulation Objective Simulation Framework, a virtual environment for testing the country’s missile architecture.

The upgraded framework is intended to bring missile defense design, implementation, and testing functions closer together in a software-based environment. 

It will use Lockheed’s digital transformation investments to support iterative development, data-driven analysis, and experimentation. 

“Missile defense in today’s threat landscape presents an integration challenge across a vast ecosystem,” Erika Marshall, vice president of Enterprise Mission Command and Control at Lockheed, said.

US Improves Missile Defense Simulations

The new contract is the latest effort by the US to improve the modeling and simulation tools used to develop and test missile defense systems.

In August, the Missile Defense Agency awarded Northrop Grumman a two-year $68.8-million contract to expand simulation and threat-modeling tools used to train missile defense personnel against increasingly sophisticated threats. 

In March, the US Army awarded AeroVironment $97 million to develop GENESIS, a hardware-based simulation environment for testing missile defense systems and electro-optical and infrared sensors. 

The system will combine multispectral projection, high-speed imaging, precision optics, automated controls, and other technologies to replicate challenging test conditions.

The effort follows the August 2025 opening of the US Army Space and Missile Defense Command's Digital Simulation and Analysis Center at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. The facility supports modeling and simulation for hypersonic weapons, directed-energy systems, tactical space, and high-altitude programs.
