The project aims to support a resilient data transport architecture for the Department of Defense by enabling direct communication between spacecraft and other space-based systems.
Under the contract, Voyager will develop a flight-ready waveform and conduct an in-orbit demonstration to assess its performance.
Voyager said the technology will draw on its experience developing radiation-resistant electronics, radio-frequency payloads, and other components that have already been tested in space.

The latest award adds satellite networking to Voyager’s recent US defense work, which has also covered missile interception, adjustable solid-rocket propulsion, and spacecraft operations in very low Earth orbit.
Earlier in August, Raytheon selected the company to provide propulsion and maneuvering technology for the Standard Missile-3 interceptor family.
The work covers controllable solid propulsion and divert, attitude, and control systems used to steer and stabilize the interceptor’s kinetic warhead outside the atmosphere.
In June, DARPA awarded Voyager $16.5 million for the second phase of its Burn n’ Go program, which seeks to make the thrust characteristics of solid rocket motors adjustable after manufacture.
A month earlier, Redwire selected Voyager to supply an acceleration measurement system for DARPA’s Otter spacecraft.
The equipment will measure changes in velocity during operations in very low Earth orbit, where atmospheric drag requires more frequent orbital adjustments.
