L3Harris Technologies is investing $25 million to grow its manufacturing footprint in Alabama to support solid rocket motor production for defense applications.

The move adds 130,000 square feet (12,077 square meters) to the firm’s existing network in Huntsville, increasing the total area of its three sites in the city to approximately 670,000 square feet (62,245 square meters).

According to the company, the expansion forms part of its ongoing investments in the region, which recently included a threefold increase in capital spending from 2024 to 2025.

That decision is critical to supporting the enterprise’s role in America's defense supply chain, as over half of L3Harris’ solid rocket motor works are located in the region.

In parallel with the establishment of the new infrastructure, the company is filling roles for the site, with positions including project engineering, manufacturing and mechanical engineering, as well as quality and skilled trades such as machinists and composite technicians.

“The additional space allows us to lean forward and surge capacity in a way that directly aligns with the Department of War’s demand for critical munition acceleration,” said Ken Bedingfield, president of missile solutions at L3Harris.

“Huntsville’s expansion at [Advanced Manufacturing Facility - South] gives us the flexibility we need to grow quickly and continue delivering for our customers.”

More Investment, New Factory

The announcement follows the Pentagon’s finalization of a $1-billion investment to expand L3Harris’ Missile Solutions subsidiary, boosting production in support of major weapons efforts including the PAC-3, THAAD, Tomahawk land-attack cruise missile, and Standard Missile systems.

L3Harris also revealed a “billion-dollar” expansion of a separate solid rocket motor plant in Virginia, doubling space, processes, and assembly of solutions for the same missiles.
