The deal for the domestically manufactured 8×8 vehicles is valued at 1.36 billion Indian rupees ($16 million), while the procurement of military trailers will reportedly cost 835 million Indian rupees ($9.8 million).
The exact number of vehicles being purchased has not been disclosed.
BEML’s 8×8 vehicles are designed with a backbone tube chassis, independent suspension, and a high-powered, air-cooled engine, ensuring superior mobility and stability in challenging terrain.
They also feature an anti-lock braking system for enhanced operational safety.
The heavy-duty trailers are capable of carrying loads up to 50 tons (110,231 pounds) and are designed to withstand the harshest environments and provide logistical flexibility.
“The indigenously developed [vehicles] showcase our engineering excellence and dedication to equipping India's armed forces with cutting-edge mobility solutions,” BEML Managing Director Shantanu Roy stated.
Part of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’
The two contracts are part of the broader “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) initiative to boost domestic defense manufacturing and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.
In 2021, BEML Ltd. was also awarded a contract to supply a range of high-mobility vehicles to support logistics operations.
Additionally, the Indian Army has announced plans to acquire 300 domestically-built rough terrain vehicles designed for high-altitude regions.
These procurements mark a significant step in India’s efforts to modernize its armed forces amid ongoing border tensions and geopolitical challenges in the region.
