Anduril Industries has announced a strategic partnership with ChatGPT-developer OpenAI to explore the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in counter-drone systems.
The collaboration will combine OpenAI’s advanced models, such as GPT-4 and OpenAI 01, with Anduril’s proven Lattice software to enhance the US military’s ability to defend against drone threats.
This combination is expected to enable the rapid and accurate analysis of time-sensitive data, thereby enhancing situational awareness for faster responses to aerial threats.
“Our partnership with OpenAI will allow us … to address urgent air defense capability gaps across the world,” Anduril co-founder Brian Schimpf explained.
“Together, we are committed to developing responsible solutions that enable military and intelligence operators to make faster, more accurate decisions in high-pressure situations.”
The terms of the partnership, including funding details, were not disclosed.
Major Shift in Policy
OpenAI had previously maintained a policy against using its AI solutions for military applications.
However, in January, the company made a notable policy shift, partnering with DARPA on cybersecurity and hiring a former Palantir security officer to pitch OpenAI’s products to the US military.
According to a spokesperson, the collaboration between Anduril and OpenAI aligns with the latter’s current policies as it focuses on developing systems to defend against unmanned aerial threats.
Rising Drone Threats
The Anduril-OpenAI partnership arises in response to the increasing threat posed by unmanned aerial systems to US and allied forces.
In January, a drone attack on a US military base in Jordan resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers.
More recently, unidentified drones were observed hovering near British military sites hosting US forces.
