The US-based materials company said it will begin producing defense-optimized cells under two product lines, Cirrus and Stratus, targeting drones, unmanned surface and underwater vehicles, ground robots, and other autonomous platforms.
Built around anode-free and lithium-metal architectures, the new cells use Natrion’s Active Separator technology and are designed to match standard 21700-type lithium-ion form factors. That allows direct replacement in existing battery packs without redesigning hardware.
The company said the cells can deliver up to 80 percent higher energy density compared with conventional lithium-ion batteries.
“This dramatically lowers capital and operational costs, allowing us to replace batteries at unprecedented rates," said Philip Lee, Natrion’s VP of Business Development for Asia-Pacific.
"The improved energy density enables extended duration and new mission capabilities that Li-ion simply can’t match.”
Initial cell samples are now being shipped for testing, with production scaling supported by its manufacturing operations in Buffalo, New York.
Unmanned Systems Upgrades
Energy systems have become a key focus in drone development as military programs push for longer endurance, higher payload capacity, and greater operational flexibility.
In April, Texas A&M University–Texarkana received a state grant to support research into battery design and testing under a $5-million program from the Texas Military Preparedness Commission’s Defense Economic Adjustment Assistance initiative.
Earlier, in October 2025, Ontario-based Volatus Aerospace signed a deal with VoltaXplore to secure a domestic supply of lithium-ion batteries for next-generation drones, featuring a silicon-based design intended to improve performance in cold conditions.
In March 2025, US startup Lyten also unveiled a lithium-sulfur battery capable of powering small drones for more than three hours.
