Northrop Grumman has secured a spot in the Pentagon’s Drone Dominance Program as the US military ramps up efforts to field large numbers of low-cost drones and munitions by 2027.

Northrop Grumman has secured a spot in the Pentagon’s Drone Dominance Program as the US military ramps up efforts to field large numbers of low-cost drones and munitions by 2027.

Under the Department of Defense initiative, Northrop Grumman was selected as one of five preferred payload providers through the program’s Lethality Prize Challenge.

The company will supply its Common UAS Payload, a modular fuze and effects module designed for integration across aerial, maritime, and ground-based drones. 

This payload is built around open-systems architecture standards to support rapid integration with multiple platforms without extensive redesign. It is also designed to deliver 360-degree lethality in harsh operating conditions using mature energetics and ruggedized electronics. 

Drone Dominance is part of a broader $1-billion effort that targets the deployment of more than 200,000 drones by 2027.

US Drone Programs Expand

The Drone Dominance Program is one of several recent Pentagon-backed competitions aimed at accelerating unmanned systems development and deployment.

In August 2023, Washington launched the Replicator initiative, a program designed to rapidly field thousands of autonomous systems across multiple domains. A second phase was launched in March 2025, with first contracts awarded in January 2026

Meanwhile, the US Army’s xTechDrone competition has continued to fund startups and nontraditional defense firms developing autonomous drone technologies, artificial intelligence-enabled systems, and counter-drone capabilities. 

The Defense Innovation Unit has also expanded its Blue UAS program over the past year, approving additional drone platforms and components for military use. The initiative is intended to speed procurement of secure, domestically sourced drone technologies.
