The Pentagon has centralized oversight of all unmanned and autonomous systems under a new “Autonomy Czar,” a move designed to accelerate the development, procurement, and fielding of US drone capabilities.

The Pentagon has centralized oversight of all unmanned and autonomous systems (UxS) under a new “Autonomy Czar,” a move designed to accelerate the development, procurement, and fielding of US drone capabilities. 

Under a newly issued memorandum, the position will direct all activities related to UxS, including oversight of unmanned systems budgets across the military services.

The office will also hold contracting authority over internal Pentagon organizations, with military departments directed to treat UxS acquisitions as a top priority.
