The US Army is testing a low-cost, radar-agnostic drone interceptor that integrates with existing command-and-control networks as part of a NATO effort to strengthen Europe’s eastern flank against potential Russian aggression.
DZYNE Technologies’ IonStrike system is being evaluated under the Eastern Flank Deterrence Initiative, a NATO-backed concept centered on unmanned systems and networked battlefield data designed to speed decision-making and offset adversary advantages in mass.
IonStrike provides a mid-range intercept capability and integrates with existing command-and-control networks, enabling soldiers to use current systems to detect, track, classify, and engage one-way attack drones.
It also offers a scalable kinetic layer bridging electronic warfare, gun-based air defense, and higher-cost missile interceptors.
“IonStrike is important because it does not require soldiers to learn a new kill chain,” 52d Air Defense Artillery Brigade Operations Officer Maj. Cody Davis said.
“It integrates with approved C2 systems, cues on existing radar feeds, and provides commanders another kinetic option within the air defense architecture,” Davis continued.
Intercepting Drone Swarms
IonStrike is launched from a multi-interceptor pallet and cued by radars integrated into existing command-and-control networks.
Current testing uses a four-interceptor launcher, while DZYNE Technologies is developing a 12-interceptor variant to improve effectiveness against larger drone swarms.
Unlike fire-and-forget interceptors, it allows operators to abort or redirect engagements, increasing flexibility against swarm threats and enabling earlier launches without automatically expending the interceptor.
Designed as a lower-cost option than its targets, IonStrike helps preserve high-end air defense missiles for more complex threats. It uses a terminal infrared seeker and a proximity-fuzed warhead to engage one-way attack drones in both day and night conditions.
“The summer assessment will determine whether IonStrike can deliver a repeatable combat layer under operational conditions,” 52d Air Defense Artillery Brigade Forward Operations Officer Maj. Benjamin Bowman said.
“The questions are straightforward: can it integrate, can it be fired through existing C2 (command-and-control), can it extend the defended area, can it be reallocated in flight, and can soldiers sustain it in the field?”
