Estonian-Croatian defense startup Defensphere is developing an armored vehicle situational awareness system with a range of up to 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
The Tallinn-based company wrote that the Vegvisir Mixed Reality Situational Awareness System uses a combination of camera systems, sensors, and algorithms to synthesize the camera images and relay them through a head-mounted display.
CEO Ingvar Pärnamäe explained that the system uses a four-layered wall of sensors “to ensure visibility in a range of tactical situations, both in daylight and, by using thermal sensors, in the dark.”
“Vegvisir creates a 360-degree field of vision with a camera and sensor system installed on the armored vehicle that allows the entire crew to see a real-time, simultaneous, minimum-latency image of the surroundings of the vehicle,” he added.

The system enables the crew to “observe, better orient and more rapidly respond than with traditional solutions” according to the company.
The system’s modular design allows the customer to use it in a range of wheeled and tracked vehicles such as the armored personnel carrier, infantry fighting vehicle, and main battle tank.
It is also being developed in line with NATO standards and being integrated with other battlefield platforms such as unmanned land vehicles, stand-alone sensors, and battlefield management systems.
