Denmark has begun its new 11-month military service program, with around 1,600 recruits entering the first intake under recent reforms.
Around 1,600 young people have begun Denmark's new extended military service program, the first intake under reforms that lengthen compulsory service and expand conscripts' roles within the armed forces.
Recruits are reporting to 14 military bases across the country and will serve for 11 months, replacing the previous four-month model used in most branches.
Service will last 12 months for selected units, including the Royal Life Guards, the Guard Hussar Regiment, cyber conscription, and the Royal Yacht Dannebrog.
Women account for about 20 percent of the current intake.
According to the Danish Armed Forces, the expansion is intended to increase the military's available manpower and operational capacity.
The number of conscripts is expected to rise to about 6,500 during the program's implementation.
“The extension of conscription provides the opportunity to use conscripts in new functions in the operational capacities, and this helps to generate faster and more combat power,” said Kenneth Strøm, head of the conscription program at the Danish Armed Forces.
“The operational tasks that conscripts can now be given also mean that permanent soldiers can be released for other tasks that require a higher degree of specialization.”

During the first three to five months, conscripts will complete basic military training, including weapons handling, first aid, physical training, and field exercises.
They will then move into operational support roles. These include emergency response, drone operations, naval combat information, radar support, and patrol tasks.
The new system also introduces a conscript lieutenant track. Selected recruits will complete 12 months of training before serving for one year as junior tactical leaders.
After completing their initial training, volunteers may participate in operational deployments, including missions in Greenland, NATO activities in Latvia, or deployments with the Royal Danish Navy.
Overseas assignments will remain voluntary.
