French company Exosens has joined a 39-million-euro ($45-million) European defense program aimed at developing advanced infrared sensors and strengthening the continent's supply chain for critical sensing technologies.
The project, known as SPIRIT, is backed by the European Defence Fund and aims to advance the development of small-pitch, large-format infrared detectors for military and security applications.
The four-year effort aims to improve detector resolution, sensitivity, and onboard processing capabilities while advancing the technology toward industrial-scale production.
The initiative also seeks to establish a European end-to-end supply chain covering semiconductor components, detector manufacturing, and camera system integration.
SPIRIT Program
SPIRIT brings together industrial companies, research institutions, and system integrators from across Europe to develop operational infrared detector systems and camera prototypes for defense use.
Exosens said it will contribute expertise in detection and imaging technologies as part of the program.
Infrared detectors are used in a range of defense systems, including surveillance equipment, missile warning systems, targeting platforms, and thermal imaging devices.
The SPIRIT initiative is part of wider European efforts to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers for key defense technologies and build sovereign industrial capabilities across the defense sector.
