France has ordered 17 Saab Giraffe 1X radars to strengthen its short-range air defense capability with mobile, vehicle-mounted systems.
Saab will supply the systems to the French Armed Forces under a contract covering 17 units, including one for testing and evaluation and 16 to be installed on Scania V3P tactical vehicles developed by Scania France in Angers.
Deliveries are scheduled between 2026 and 2027.
The agreement also includes spare parts, training, and support services. Saab and Scania France have formed a consortium for the duration of the program to manage production and integration.
Giraffe 1X is a compact 3D radar designed for air defense, counter-drone operations, and protection of critical infrastructure.
Mounted on tactical vehicles, the system is intended to give French forces greater mobility in tracking low-altitude and fast-moving aerial threats, particularly drones, while supporting rapid deployment in contested environments.
Giraffe 1X Adoption
Other countries have also moved to expand or integrate Saab’s Giraffe 1X radar in recent years as demand grows for mobile, counter-drone-capable air surveillance systems.
In April, the US Army awarded a roughly $24-million contract to Saab for the delivery of 10 Giraffe 1X air surveillance radars to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
In December 2025, Saab alsodelivered these radars to Latvia and integrated the system into Mobile Short Range Air Defense units delivered to Lithuania under a $148-million deal.
