Manufacturer Rheinmetall announced that a 73-million-euro ($75 million) order had been placed for one Skynex system, which will serve as a “pilot” platform for the Italian Army.
The system includes a high-performance sensor and tracking unit for air surveillance, a command-and-control station, and four 35mm firing units. The package also comprises ammunition, spare parts, training support, and maintenance services.
Delivery of the Skynex platform is scheduled for 2026.
Rheinmetall also revealed that the agreement includes an option for Italy to procure three additional Skynex systems, potentially increasing the total contract value to 280 million euros ($288 million).
The Skynex System
Skynex is a cannon-based air defense system designed to provide effective close-range protection against threats that conventional guided weapons struggle to counter.
It has a maximum firing rate of 1,000 rounds per minute and a range of up to 4 kilometers (2.5 miles).
The system employs programmable AHEAD ammunition, ensuring precise target engagement and improved resistance to electronic countermeasures.
It is reportedly effective against drones, missiles, and fast-moving aircraft.
“Skynex is based on the concept of separating airspace surveillance from the effectors,” Rheinmetall stated. “Italy has opted for the configuration with the XTAR 3D radar from Rheinmetall, which can monitor the airspace in a radius of up to 50 km.”
The Skynex system is already under contract with several countries, including Romania, Austria, Qatar, and Ukraine.
