NVL Group has cut the steel for the German Navy's first reconnaissance ship, marking the official start of construction of the new Type 424 intelligence-gathering vessels (AGIs).
This follows an amended contract signed in 2023 for the Bremen-based firm to build three Type 424 ships to replace the German Navy’s aging Type 423 Oste-class AGIs in partnership with Lürssen Werft.
While specific features of the ships have not been disclosed, they are reportedly around 132 meters (433 feet) long and designed for electronic and signals intelligence missions.
The first Type 424 AGI is expected in 2029, with subsequent vessels to follow in 2030 and 2031.
Additionally, the deal includes NVL Group providing training and a reference facility scheduled for delivery in 2027.
Strengthening Defense
Germany has been upgrading its defense posture and strengthening its NATO commitments in light of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, in addition to preparing civilian emergency shelters.
In October 2024, the country commissioned Rohde & Schwarz to enhance its F124 Sachsen-class frigates with electronic support measures and inaugurated a new NATO naval command center to boost defense readiness in the Baltic Sea region.
