Qatar has launched its fourth Al Zubarah-class vessel, the Sumaysimah, in a ceremony at Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri’s Muggiano shipyard.
The Qatari Ministry of Defense has launched its fourth Al Zubarah-class vessel, the Sumaysimah, in a ceremony at Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri’s Muggiano shipyard on March 29.
The corvette’s launch was attended by the Qatari Ambassador to Italy Khalid bin Yousef Al-Sada, Brigadier Rashid Al Qashouti, the Chief of Staff Representative of Qatar Armed Forces, Brigadier Ali Ameen, and other high-ranking officials.
About the Sumaysima
Measuring 107 meters (351 feet) long by 14.70 meters (48 feet) wide, the Sumaysima is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 28 knots (52 kilometers/32 miles per hour) and can accommodate up to 112 people.
The vessel is equipped with a combined diesel and diesel plant engine.
Deal History
In August 2017, Qatar announced the order for four Al Zubarah-class, having signed the 5 billion-euro ($5.57 billion) contract in June 2016.
Production on the Sumaysima began in September 2018 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Muggiano, Italy.
Designed for tasks including surveillance, rescue, and combat, the Al Zubarah-class is a group of corvettes built by the company for the Qatari Emiri Navy.
The Italian shipbuilder showcased the multi-role air defense corvettes for the first time during DIMDEX 2018, a biennial defense exhibition hosted by Qatar.
