The agreement includes equipping the MEKO 200-based warships with the latest Tacticos Combat Management System, NS100 radar, and STIR fire-control sensors.
Thales will carry out the mid-life upgrade and provide follow-on support and services locally.
After the modernization is completed, the company will continue collaborating with domestic industry partners to sustain the frigates’ operational readiness.
“We are proud to have been selected for this mid-life upgrade, which will integrate Thales’ advanced technology into the Hydra frigate class mission system, thereby enhancing the capabilities of the Hellenic Navy,” Thales country director for Greece, Cyprus, and Malta Vincent Megaides said.
“This new operational baseline built around the latest version of Tacticos Combat Management System will be a reference for the future capabilities of the Hellenic Navy. In close collaboration with local industry and partners, we are committed to ensuring sustained operational readiness.”
Mid-Life Upgrade
The modernization effort is intended to improve the combat effectiveness of the four Hydra-class frigates, the first of which entered service in 1992.
The software-defined S-band NS100 radar uses dual-axis multi-beam active electronically scanned array technology to provide enhanced situational awareness, including surface surveillance and target tracking, at ranges of up to 280 kilometers (174 miles).
The STIR 1.2 EO Mk2 fire-control system combines radar and electro-optical sensors to support accurate target tracking and engagement in complex operational environments.
Meanwhile, the Tacticos combat management system serves as the central command, control, and decision-support element of the frigates’ mission systems, supporting sensor management, tactical picture compilation, situation assessment, action support, and weapon control.
Hydra Frigate
The Hydra-class frigate is based on the MEKO 200 design developed by German shipbuilder thyssenkrupp Marine Systems.
The vessel measures 117.5 meters (386 feet) in length with a beam of 14.8 meters (48.7 feet).
It is powered by a combination of gas turbines, diesel engines, and controllable-pitch propellers, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 57 kilometers (36 miles) per hour.
The frigates are armed with lightweight automated guns, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, Evolved SeaSparrow missiles, and torpedoes.
They also feature a flight deck capable of operating one Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk helicopter and can accommodate up to 170 personnel.
