The UK has launched the eighth Innovation Support to Operations competition to fast-track scalable defense technologies.

The UK has launched the eighth cycle of its Innovation Support to Operations program, seeking defense technologies that can be manufactured at scale and deployed rapidly to military users.

Managed by UK Defence Innovation (UKDI), the competition invites proposals from UK businesses and academic institutions for technologies that can transition from development to operational deployment within 12 months of project completion. 

Applications close on September 22, while funding decisions are expected in December, ahead of project starts in January next year.

The initiative prioritizes rapid fielding, with projects expected to reach prototype demonstration in a relevant operational environment within four months.

Applicants must also demonstrate that their technologies can be manufactured affordably and that production can be scaled quickly.

Projects are expected to cost up to 350,000 pounds ($465,550), although proposals of up to 1 million pounds ($1.3 million) will also be considered. 

Contracts will run for a maximum of four months.

Priority Capability Areas

The latest competition focuses on five capability areas identified by the UK Ministry of Defence.

They include counter-uncrewed aerial system interceptor sensors, seekers for one-way attack, uncrewed aerial systems, platform survivability technologies, telemetry data communications, and autonomous maritime navigation.

Projects will receive support from project managers, technical specialists, and military stakeholders throughout development to help accelerate delivery.

The competition is open to UK-registered businesses, academic institutions, and sole traders conducting project activities within the country.

UKDI is also encouraging organizations to form partnerships through its innovation network to combine complementary technologies and expertise before submitting proposals.
