The Royal Air Force has taken delivery of its first E-7 Wedgetail airborne early warning aircraft, marking a major step in the UK’s effort to modernize its airborne surveillance and threat detection capabilities.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) has taken delivery of its first E-7 Wedgetail airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft, marking a major step in the UK’s effort to modernize airborne surveillance capabilities.

Boeing delivered the Mk1 aircraft, designated WT001, to the Lossiemouth air base following work at STS Aviation Services in Birmingham.

The aircraft will continue testing and evaluation activities before formally entering RAF service with No. 8 Squadron.

Its arrival marks a key milestone for the UK’s long-delayed airborne surveillance program, which is intended to replace the retired E-3D Sentry fleet. Once operational, the Wedgetail will provide long-range airborne surveillance, battle management, and command-and-control functions for joint operations.

RAF Lossiemouth Station Commander Group Captain Sarah Brewin said the aircraft’s arrival represented “a significant step” in delivering the RAF’s next-generation airborne surveillance capability.

Britain originally planned to acquire five Wedgetail aircraft before reducing the order to three in 2021 as part of wider defense cost-cutting measures. The program has since faced delays tied to aircraft modification work and certification.

Improving UK Surveillance Capabilities 

The Wedgetail joins a broader modernization push across Britain’s surveillance and maritime fleet.

In March, the Royal Navy began integrating ANAFI Parrot quadcopters into operations around Gibraltar to strengthen maritime surveillance, force protection, and intelligence gathering.

The lightweight electric drones are equipped with electro-optical sensors capable of delivering high-resolution imagery for real-time situational awareness, including short-range aerial reconnaissance and vessel tracking.

Earlier, in December 2025, the UK Ministry of Defence’s innovation arm launched a one-million-pound ($1.3-million) competition aimed at accelerating the development of autonomous sensor systems designed to detect and counter deception in intelligence and surveillance operations.

A month earlier, in November 2025, the British Army’s artillery arm received its first batch of ground-based surveillance radar systems from Elbit Systems UK. The systems are designed for both surveillance and “fall-of-shot” correction, improving battlefield awareness and troop survivability.
