The US State Department has approved the possible sale of a ballistic missile defense radar worth $700 million to the UK.
The US State Department has approved the possible sale of a Ballistic Missile Defense Radar (BMDR) and Command and Battle Management and Communications (C2BMC) equipment worth $700 million to the UK.
The UK government previously requested one BMDR and two C2BMCs.
The sale includes “design and construction of a combined radar-equipment shelter; encryption devices, secure communication equipment, and other required COMSEC (Communications Security) equipment to support radar operations.”
Lockheed Martin Primary Contractor
Lockheed Martin will be the primary contractor for the proposed sale, which is expected to improve the UK's ability to meet current and future ballistic missile threats.
The UK’s sole ballistic missile defense radar is at Royal Air Force Fylingdales, North Yorkshire. It also serves as one of three stations in the US Ballistic Missile Early Warning System network, the other two being at Thule Air Base, Greenland, and Clear Air Force Station, Alaska.
