Japan has selected Patria-built vehicles to replace the Type-96 personnel carriers of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.
Japan has selected Patria-built armored modular vehicles (AMV) to replace the Type-96 8X8 wheeled armored personnel carriers of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.
The agreement will see the Finnish company manufacture the AMVs in Japan to support the local economy and technological developments.
Furthermore, the approach is expected to secure the vehicle’s supply and service to the Japanese forces.
“The selection of Patria AMVXP 8x8 and our proven licensing model is great proof of Patria’s capability to deliver the latest technology and to enable local security of supply,” Patria Market Area World Senior Vice President Janne Räkköläinen explained.
“Patria AMVXP 8x8 has successfully proven its superior performance, as well as its mobility and protection, in various crisis management missions, and Japan will be the ninth user country of Patria’s AMV vehicle family.”

Patria has been working on Japan’s wheeled armored personnel carriers (WAPC) program since 2018. As part of the partnership, the company has established a local subsidiary to further support the Japanese military.
Following the latest announcement, Patria and Japan will enter license negotiations to transition AMPVs as the next WAPC platform.
“Patria has industry-leading experience of licensing and cooperation with local industries in many countries, and we are committed to this in Japan as well,” Janne Räkköläinen said.
“The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force will receive state-of-the-art and high performance Japanese manufactured AMVXP 8x8 vehicles to support critical operations for decades to come.”
