The US Army has awarded AM General a contract to procure High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles, commonly known as Humvees.
The US Army has awarded AM General an $82.2-million firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract to procure High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs), commonly known as Humvees.
With the latest award, the contract’s total cumulative face value rises to $754.6 million. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of August 31, 2028.
Dating back to 1983, the HMMWV program began when the army awarded AM General its first production contract for 55,000 vehicles. More than 280,000 Humvees had been produced by 2012.
The army has continued to procure the vehicles even as it pursues platforms to replace them in some roles. In September 2025, it awarded AM General a $50.9-million contract modification for 224 Humvees, following a $126.5-million order in July for M1165A1B3 variants.
Call for Replacement
In 2023, the US Army selected AM General for an $8.66-billion Joint Light Tactical Vehicle follow-on production contract, as part of efforts to replace its aging Humvee fleet. The deal covers up to 20,682 vehicles and 9,883 trailers, with the initial award valued at $230.8 million.
The service is also considering commercially derived utility vehicles for lower-risk roles. Concepts based on the Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle and Light Service Support Vehicle have been proposed as lower-cost alternatives, although neither is currently a program of record.
The HMMWV is also being replaced in some infantry formations by the Infantry Squad Vehicle, a lighter platform designed for rapid tactical mobility.
Humvee
Introduced in the 1980s, AM General’s Humvee has undergone continuous upgrades over the decades. Depending on the configuration, the 4×4 vehicle can carry up to six personnel and measure up to 15 feet (5 meters) in length.
It can be armed with 40-millimeter grenade launchers, .50-caliber and 7.62-millimeter machine guns, and anti-tank missile launchers.
Powered by a 190-horsepower Detroit Diesel V8 engine and a four-speed automatic transmission, the Humvee has a range of up to 350 miles (563 kilometers) and a top speed exceeding 70 miles (113 kilometers) per hour.
