Diehl Defence and BAE Systems have signed an agreement to integrate Diehl Defence's conventional 127mm (5-inch) full-caliber naval ammunition family with the Mk 45 Mod 4 naval gun.
The Mk 45 is one of the world's most widely deployed 127mm naval guns, equipping more than 200 warships across the fleets of over a dozen navies, including those of the US, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Spain, Denmark, Norway, and New Zealand.
Its Mod 4 configuration delivers naval surface fire support at ranges exceeding 20 nautical miles (22 miles/36 kilometers) using the US Navy's 5-inch Cargo projectile and an improved propellant charge.
As part of the agreement, the companies will work on the technical integration required for the Mk 45 Mod 4, targeting both domestic and international customers.

Integration of IRIS-T Missiles With BAE Launchers
Beyond naval gun systems, the companies also plan to deepen their collaboration by exploring the potential integration of Diehl Defence's IRIS-T family of guided missiles with BAE Systems' shipboard launching systems.
The collaboration follows Diehl Defence's earlier efforts to adapt the IRIS-T for naval use. The company previously tested a naval demonstrator of its IRIS-T SLM air defense system from the C-deck of a German Navy Type 125 frigate, achieving a high hit rate, according to the company.
“By working together to explore these technical synergies, we can develop customized solutions for our customers’ complex maritime defence requirements,” Diehl Defence Chief Program Officer Harald Buschek explained.
“By combining our systems with BAE Systems’ platforms, we can enhance the effectiveness and operational capability of maritime defence systems.”
