BAE Systems has been contracted to provide continued engineering support and facilities integration services for the US Navy’s Sea-Launched Cruise Missile–Nuclear (SLCM-N) program.
The US Department of the Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs has awarded the $7.97-million contract modification, with work scheduled from June 1, 2025, through September 30, 2026.
The effort supports the development of a low-yield nuclear-capable cruise missile deployable from naval platforms.
Tactical Nuclear Weapon
The SLCM-N missile offers a flexible nuclear option to the US military in a crisis with precise and comparatively limited impact.
Moreover, a sea-based platform will have greater availability and regional presence than an air-launched option, which is more vulnerable and requires refueling.
The weapon will likely be deployed from surface ships such as Arleigh Burke-class destroyers or attack submarines such as the Virginia and Los Angeles-class submarines.
The missile is expected to feature advanced precision guidance and stealth, with a range of over 1,000 kilometers (621 miles).
Its delivery is expected by 2036.
