Poland has taken the delivery of the MikroSAR satellite reconnaissance system from the Finnish company ICEYE.

Poland has taken delivery of the MikroSAR satellite reconnaissance system from Finnish company ICEYE.

The 200-million-euro ($230 million) contract was signed with Poland’s Ministry of National Defence in May 2025.

Under the program, ICEYE delivered the space segment, while Polish defense company Wojskowe Zakłady Łączności, part of the Polish Armaments Group, provided the ground segment and mobile infrastructure.

Poland’s Geospatial Reconnaissance and Satellite Services Agency (ARGUS) now operates the system independently, following operator training completed during delivery.

The program included the launch of four synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, with the original baseline requiring three satellites to be launched within 10 months of contract signing.

Qualification testing has also been completed to verify compliance with Polish military operational and technical requirements.

“According to publicly available data, this marks the fastest deployment of an operational satellite program in the world and among the fastest-implemented procurement programs in the history of the Polish military, demonstrating what is already possible in Europe at scale,” stated ICEYE.

Space-Based Reconnaissance Capability

Designated POLSARIS, the constellation gives Warsaw an independent radar-based Earth observation capability for military reconnaissance.

The delivery “means taking responsibility for translating the potential of Polish radar satellites into concrete operational value: faster access to reliable data, more complete situational awareness, and more effective support for the decision-making process,” stated Col. Leszek Paszkowski, Head of ARGUS.

Unlike optical satellites, SAR systems use radar to generate imagery regardless of weather or daylight conditions, allowing continuous observation.

ICEYE’s satellites can produce imagery with resolutions of up to 25 centimeters (9.8 inches).

Designed for both wide-area surveillance and targeted high-resolution monitoring, the systems support missions such as border observation, maritime domain awareness, and broader military intelligence collection.
